We have homeschooled for quite a few years. We do not take summers off, never have, I always prefer to break up and take a week here or there during times of the year when the weather is much nicer for traveling. This year traveling isn’t likely to happen though. It’s not always easy. Some of my children and self motivated and self starters and some well with some doing school is akin to pulling teeth. it’s awful, but I know it would be so much worse if they did not have an education that was tailored to their particular learning needs.
This is where public school can never compare. A classroom must function to the whole. So everything has to cater to the middle of the road, the place that the most students will benefit. This created boredom and frustration for students who are not challenged and struggles of all sorts for students who can not perform at that pace or level at all times.
Here in our house until highschool all lessons are to teach master only. There is no fail/pass… passing is the ONLY option because if you don’t get it… you back up and start over until you do. You simply can not fail its not an option you try until you succeed.
This means I have children who will not enter college until 18 because that is where they will be and children who will start college at 12/13 years old because that is the pace they need to be at. Your kids are not clones. People have to stop trying to raise each child just the same because it worked before. NO TWO PEOPLE at all ever are exactly the same. No two people should be expected to perform or act exactly the same. That simply is not reality and sets every child up for failure on some level.
Your expectations have to be based on the individual. Stop holding everyone to the standard that is arbitrarily set by some idiots half of which fucked up their own kids if they even had any at all. LISTEN to your children. Maybe the one thing that can come from this pandemic and the issues it has caused with education choices is that maybe just maybe some people will finally back up and SEE their children. Stop seeing a grade level or a requirement and see the individual child and focus on what that child needs. Not what you want them to need, not what is convenient.
WHAT THE FUCK DO THEY REALLY NEED!
Education needs and overhaul just as badly as the police force does. The government does too. But the place to start is with the children. Stop being so blinded by what you have been told an education should be and find out how your child learns use THAT to decide what’s best for them this year. Online public school, in person school, online homeschool, homeschool using text books really look at the options.
FYI your children are NOT clones… They don’t have to all do the same option. You heard me… You may end up if you truly listen with one in public school and one in an academy online and one unschooling… Because they all are unique. Stop forcing your kids into boxes they don’t fit into.
